Arab League declares Hezbollah group a terrorist organization

  • The Arab League has declared Lebanese movement Hezbollah a “terrorist” group, the move comes after the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) had adopted the same stance.
  • Decision regarding this was taken by Arab League foreign ministers during meeting at the organisation’s seat in Egypt’s capital Cairo. Nearly all 22 Arab League members supported the decision, except Lebanon and Iraq which expressed reservations. The United States, Canada and Australia already have listed Hezbollah as a terrorist group and the European Union (EU) has also blacklisted its military wing.

  • Hezbollah is a Shia political organisation with an armed wing that fights in neighbouring Syria to support the government of President Bashar al-Assad. Currently, it is fighting in Lebanon’s neighbouring Syria to support the Government of President Bashar al-Assad. It is backed by Saudi Arabia’s regional rival Iran, with whom relations of Saudi Arabia have worsened this year.
  • Few days back Hassan Nasrallah, the Hezbollah leader, accused Saudi Arabia of pressuring Lebanon to silence his group, which made Saudi Arabia very angry as very few in gulf dare to say against its royal family.
