CCS gives nod to acquire 2 AWACS from Israel

  • The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS)  has cleared a proposal to acquire two more Airborne Warning and Control Systems (AWACS) at the cost of Rs.7,500 crore under a tripartite contract with Israel and Russia.  
  • The CCS chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also approved the proposal for induction of the 4th regiment of supersonic cruise missile Brahmos and 2 more of Pinaka rocket launchers in the India Army.
  • The Indian Air Force (IAF) already had three such AWACS platforms that comprise of Israeli-made radars mounted on Russian heavy transport planes IL-76.

Airborne Warning and Control Systems (AWACS) :

  • They are basically Israeli early-warning radar suites mounted on Russian IL-76 transport aircraft. With a 400-km range and 360-degree coverage, they give an ability to see deep inside enemy territory and are capable of detecting incoming fighters, cruise missiles and drones much before ground-based radars.
