  • Purno Agitok (P. A.) Sangma was born on September 1, 1947 in Chapahati village in the West Garo Hills District of Meghalaya.
  • He earned MA in International Relations from Dibrugarh University in Assam and studied law.

Political career :

  • In 1973, he became Vice-President of the Pradesh Youth Congress in Meghalaya and he was elected to Lok Sabha for the first time in 1977 from Tura (Lok Sabha constituency) and remained a member of the Lok Sabha until 14th Lok Sabha, except for the 9th Lok Sabha.
  • He became general secretary of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee in 1975 and served as Minister of State for Coal (independent charge) in the Narasimha Rao government in the 1990s.
  • He has served as the Chief Minister of Meghalaya from 1988 to 1990. He has also served as Minister of State of Home Affairs, Labour, Commerce and Coal.
  • He was one of the founders of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) along with Sharad Pawar and Tariq Anwar in 1999, after their expulsion. In 2013, Mr. Sangma founded the National People’s Party.
  • He was expelled from the party in 2012 when he refused to accept its decision to back out of the election for President of India. He had unsuccessfully had contested 13th Presidential election in 2012 against incumbent President of India Pranab Mukherjee.
