Sitting for an army exam in underwear! Unheard of, isn’t it. But it happened recently in Muzafarpur in Bihar. There were people who came to take an exam scheduled for a future in the army, and they had to sit for it with their clothes “ordered off.”
Thousands of men aspiring for a clerk job in the army came to take the exam at Muzaffarpur in Bihar, and they were asked to strip down to their underwear. They were asked to get rid of “the vest too” by the examiners, said the reports. The instructions to strip down to their underwear were given to about 1100 stunned candidates and they removed their outfits before sitting for the clerk exam.
This “order” was a result of blatant cheating that has been encouraged by both parents and examiners in the past in Bihar. This was the only way out to prevent cheating, felt the instructors. They were asked to get down to their underwears because this was the only way paper pieces would not be hidden on the body. The candidates had to ultimately sit on the ground and keep their writing boards on their thighs as they scribbled away.
Defending this weird “rule” for the examination, the army recruitment board director gave a statement saying “We earlier had a bad experience while conducting exams. This has been done to avoid cheating.” Last year during the tenth class examinations students had cheated and their images involving mass cheating had been leaked to the international press.
Relatives, friends and even parents of the students had been caught scaling walls of the centre of examinations, and they were clicked passing bits of papers to the students. This created a great furor and earned the wrath of the examination board members.
Bihar has strictly ordered jail for relatives and a fine of Rs 20,000 for the children who are caught cheating. The classrooms have been equipped with CCTV cameras and is all prepared for live coverage from certain exam centers in order to avoid cheating.
