Marijuana use can cause memory: study

Matthew J. Smith, a part of the study and professor of psychiatry and behavioral science at North-western University Feinberg School of Medicine showed his surprise at this effect of marijuana and has confirmed “Some who had a history of smoking marijuana as teenagers and others who didn’t, found that two years after abstaining, those who abused the substance scored worse on tests that assessed their long-term memory. Those who smoked did so for three years, and more than 80 percent of the smoking group reported using marijuana every day”.

A group of men and women aged 18-30 were selected for higher-level visual processing, by the researchers. The result obtained from them showed that 84 per cent people had given up marijuana use till middle age but 12 per cent continued to use the drug. Both the result compared and study confirmed that those who were actively smoking marijuana scored worse on mental processing and verbal memory but others who had given up the drug, still had some effects.

Scientists have warned all recreational marijuana users, especially as now marijuana is becoming legalized in Alaska, Oregon, Colorado and Washington and many more places.

Researchers says that more work have to be done on effects of marijuana drug as some positive studies have found that less use of marijuana can slow down the problem. At the other side, findings shed a negative light on the drug’s use wherein study have found that heavy marijuana use can shrink the amygdala and the hippocampus.

Like other drugs, marijuana is also a drug that can harm user if taken excessively.
