Glow-in-the-dark frog found in Argentina

Scientists have discovered the world’s first fluorescent frog in Argentina.

Hypsiboas punctatus: The glowing frog

  • Researchers found a South American polka dot tree frog (Hypsiboas punctatus) that uses fluorescent molecules, totally unlike those found in other animals.
  • The newly discovered frog sports a muted palette of greens, yellows and reds under normal light but gives off a bright blue and green glow in the dark.
  • Scientists expected to find red fluorescence in these frogs from a pigment called biliverdin.
  • The ability to absorb light at short wavelengths and re-emit it at longer wavelengths is called fluorescence.
  • The phenomena is rare in terrestrial animals.
  • Many ocean creatures exhibit fluorescence, including corals, fish, sharks and one species of sea turtle.
  • On land, fluorescence was previously known in only parrots and some scorpions.

Law to regulate use of air conditioner

  • The government could bring in a notification which have rules that define operating parameters for ACs.
  • This was because several places frequently set their air conditioners to extremely low temperatures, irrespective of whether the weather required it to be so and thereby consumed an excess of electricity.
  • The move is expected to discourage the establishments to buy more Air Conditioners as they will not be allowed to keep extremely low temperatures.
  • In Japan, there are regulations that require air-conditioners be set at a specific temperature.

Hydrochlorofluorocarbons

  • HCFC were originally brought in as replacements for refrigerant-chemicals but later found to have a high global warming potential.
  • India is ongoing with plans to phase out hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFC), chemicals widely used in refrigerants and air conditioners. India is a Party to the Montreal Protocol and it needs to phase-out Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) including HCFC.
  • India is one of the largest consumers of HCFCs after China and is expected to use even more of it because of the projected growth in the sale of air- conditioners. India has agreed to stop the use of HCFCs by 2030.

Jalyukt Shivar Yojana unsustainable, says study

  • The Maharashtra government’s drought proofing scheme, Jalyukt Shivar Yojana, has accelerated the rate of groundwater extraction, says a study conducted by South Asia Network on Dams, Rivers and People (SANDRP).
  • South Asia Network on Dams, Rivers and People (SANDRP) is a informal network f organisations working on issues related with water sector.

Jalyukt Shivir Yojana

  • The scheme was launched in 2014 by Maharashtra government with an objective to harvest rainwater and enhance groundwater levels.
